PAEDIATRIC TRAINING PROGRAMS

The Specialty Training Program (STP) in Paediatrics and Child Health (PCH) in Zambia.

STP is a work-based competence -based professional training programme situated in an accredited training facility managed by specialists in Paediatrics and Child Health with an oversight by the Zambia College of Medicine and Surgery (ZACOMS) working through ZPA. The training programme encourages self-directed learning, life-long learning and student-centred approaches while providing robust and structured guidance. The following programmes are found under STP in PCH:

1. Paediatric diploma in Neonatology

A one year-based program in the care of the newborn. Training sites are currently both on the Copperbelt and Lusaka.

2. Paediatrics and Child Health fellowship.

A four-year based program with an initial 2-year focus on General paediatrics and a 2-year focus on paediatric subspecialties e.g. paediatric cardiology, neurology and gastroenterology etc. Training at accredited STP sites.

3. Paediatric Neurology fellowship.

This is a 5-year based program with an initial 3-year focus in General Paediatrics and 2-year focus on neurology. Training at accredited STP sites.

Master of Medicine (Paediatrics and Child Health) - MMED

MMED in Paediatrics and Child Health is a 4-year university based postgraduate program for medical doctors seeking to specialise as Paediatrics. The goal of the programme is to provide learners with specialist-level knowledge and practical clinical skills essential to the practice of Paediatrics and Child health.

Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from a recognised university and have full registration with the Health Professionals Council of Zambia (HPCZ). 

MMED in Paediatrics and Child Health is currently being offered at the following universities:

  • University of Zambia (UNZA).
  • Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU).

Short Courses

Paediatric pre-conference training

An interactive and skills based 2-day training hosted by ZPA. This short course is perfect for health professionals looking to enhance their paediatric skills as well as refresh their skills. The course offers a chance to learn from the experts, participation in hands-on activities and network with colleagues.

Highlights from the 2025 Paediatric pre-AGM training:    
The 2025 training session focused on training health professionals in the following: 

  • Approach to common cardiac problems
  • Paediatric Nephrology 101
  • TB in Children
  • Sickle cell disease and other haematological problems
  • Neonatal resuscitation

Intercollegiate training

ZPA in collaboration with fellow professional associations host the intercollegiate training that serves as a platform to strengthen the training of doctors in the diagnosis and management of common paediatric conditions. Beyond clinical knowledge, this training motivates young doctors to pursue specialization in paediatrics and child health.

Below are some highlights of this training done in April of 2025

PET (Paediatric Epilepsy Training)

This was a two day training held in conjunction with the Zambia League Against Epilepsy (ZLAE). This training focuses on equipping doctors with essential knowledge on identifying and managing paediatric epilepsy. This tailor-made training covers diagnosis, treatment and clinical case discussions to build confidence in managing epilepsy in children. For Paediatric and Child Health trainees, PET is a requirement for qualification.
