UNDER THE THEME:

ADVANCING INTERGRATED CHILD HEALTH CARE IN ZAMBIA FROM INNOVATION TO IMPACT

SUB-THEMES:

Strengthening the quality of the care, continuum reducing inequality in access to quality neonatal, paediatric and adolesent health care
Accelerating progress in the prevention and management of infectious diseases (HIV, TB, Malaria and vaccine preventable diseases)
Addressing nutrition development and paediatric NCD’s
Harnessing digital health and AI for improved paediatric service delivery and training.
Data-driven decision-making and local research leadership (implementation, research)
Strengthening paediatric trainging, mentorship and workforce capacity
Public private partnership for sustaiable child health.

Previous Events

The Zambia Paediatric association held its 2025 Scientific conference and Annual General meeting under the theme: Sustaining child health gains through innovation, resilience and local action. Held at Sandys Creation Resort, the meeting boasted an attendance of more than 180 delegates and associates.

ZPA and the Ministry of Health Zambia also launched the consolidated Guidelines for Childhood Cancer Care. The guidelines are intended to improve and strengthen early diagnosis and referral for treatment of childhood cancers in all Hospitals. The launch was officiated by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical services, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi.

ZPA also awarded doctors for their outstanding contributions to the paediatric population. Awarded were the following : Dr. Leah Seaman, Dr. Nfwama Kawatu,Dr. Suzanna Mwanza, Dr. Musaku Mwenechanya, Dr. Rachael Namwinga and Dr. Sitali Maswenyeho.

The Zambia Paediatric Association Hosted a 2-day skills-based training course. This Pre-AGM training focused on Approach to common cardiac problems, Paediatric Nephrology 101, Sickle Cell disease and other Haematological problem, TB in children as well as Neonatal resuscitation. We were pleased to host Professor Nicholas Madsen – Chief of Paediatric cardiology at University of South Texas who led the paediatric cardiology session. Other notable trainers included Dr. Agnes Mtaja, Dr. Uzima Chirwa and Dr. Veronica Sichizya just to mention a few.

World pneumonia Day was celebrated worldwide on the 12^th of November. ZPA in partnership with The Ministry of Health, UNICEF, Save the Children, CIDRZ and other corporating partners commemorated with a community march pass at Kalingalinga Clinic. The event was graced and officially opened by the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical services Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi.

“Let us all work harder to ensure every child in our community receives life-saving vaccinations, reduce vaccine-preventable diseases and raise awareness so families seek early care, diagnosis and treatment when pneumonia strikes” – A powerful statement made by the guest of Honour, Dr. Lishimpi.

As ZPA we truly believe that together, we can protect our children from pneumonia- the #1 infectious killer of children under 5 worldwide.

Every year,13 million newborns worldwide are born too soon. In Zambia, preterm birth remains one of the leading causes of death in children under 5.

On the 17^th of November ZPA joined the world in honouring those precious preterm babies who arrive early but fight with incredible resilience. The 2025 theme was “Give Preterm Babies a strong start for a brighter future.” Believing that knowledge is our greatest ally, we commemorated the day by hosting a webinar led by Neonatologists Dr. Gae Mundundu and Dr. Rachael Chomba. The webinar was titled “Small wonders, Big Challenges: Celebrating Resilience on world prematurity day.” We dived deeper into preterm care strategies, survivor stories and practical tips for families.

ZPA is committed to giving every preterm baby In Zambia the nurturing beginnings they deserve.

Early in the year 2025, ZPA was privileged to be part of a successful intercollegiate training in collaboration with fellow professional associations. This training was a significant milestone in the journey to strengthen the training od medical doctors in the diagnosis and management of common paediatric conditions.

The intercollegiate training not only provided clinical knowledge but also motivated young doctors to pursue their Master’s education in the paediatric sector

June 2025 saw ZPA host the Teachers inclusion training under the theme: Bridging the gap- Empowering Teachers to support diverse learners. This program was an initiative by the ZPA to enhance teachers’ understanding of special needs and equipping them with inclusive classroom strategies, building confidence and competence in supporting diverse learners.

The event consisted of a multidisciplinary team including paediatricians, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists and educators.

The session was opened by the ZPA president Dr. Donald Mumba. Plenary sessions included topics such as identifying diverse learners and referral pathways for medical management; Importance of Inclusive education practices and Behaviour management within the classroom.

The impact was palpable and resounding feedback was given by the teachers. By embracing inclusion, we provide opportunities for our children to achieve emotional and social growth, encourage diversity and acceptance among educators and promote academic achievement.

The ZPA, whose mission is to ensure that the care of all children is at the forefront of health and all other sectors dealing with children, has prioritised inclusivity in children’s schools.
